Judo Belts

Learning Judo is a journey, and at each step of that journey your Instructor will award belts at your grading. Demonstrating set moves, kata and practical competition skills, you will move from white, through the various colours until you achieve Black, when your Judo journey truly begins.

The Judo belt system was introduced during the early 20th century as a means of giving students encouragement that they were progressing. Until then, Judo belts were unheard of, you simply trained until your Sensei said you were good enough, which you usually proved against other Judoka.

With Judo becoming a well established sport, the Judo belt system was updated to include competition performance, as well as the basics of kata and demonstration of technique. The important thing is that you earn each belt, and can look upon your progress with pride.
