Taekwondo Belts

As with all martial arts, the Taekwondo belts system was designed to help students gain confidence as they progress from beginner to Dan grade. Demonstrating basic drills, Poomsae and sparring techniques (called Kyorugi), each step of your progress will see you gain a new colour belt.

Taekwondo belts use the same colour system as other martial arts, with an additional interim level of coloured stripes between the main colours. Like Judo, Taekwondo is predominantly a competition based martial art, and most gradings will heavily focus on sparring techniques to measure a students progress.

Traditional clubs will still make sure you understand the fundamentals, so be prepared to learn everything towards your next belt! From white to black, the journey usually takes around 2 to 3 years.
