WTF Taekwondo, for those who maybe do not know, is the Olympic Taekwondo and is a full contact sport. Overseen by the World Taekwondo Federation, with affiliate in most countries, WTF Taekwondo has continued to develop and improve, refining techniques and is now one of the most organised martial sports, alongside Judo (another Olympic sport!).

We are often asked about what the requirements are for WTF sparring, and, fortunately, it is not as complicated as people sometimes believe!

All WTF Sparring requires approved sparring gear, comprising of the following:

Head Guard

Body Protector (Hogu)

Forearm Guards

Shin Guards

Groin Guard

Hand Protectors

You will also need a good quality gum shield, and these are not required to be WTF approved.

We stock two ranges, Kwon and adidas. In our opinion, Kwon offers not only the most cost effective solution, it is also one of the best quality approved kits on the market. As an additional safety feature, all our WTF equipment is also CE approved.

It is also built to last, so once you have made your initial outlay on uniform and sparring kit, it will last you for several years.

At Black Eagle, we use the more common sizing methods for both Karate Suits and Judo Suits, the metric system. As with any clothing, there are differences between different brands, but fortunately they are relatively small.

Karate and Judo suits are based on an overall height sizing. For example; size 120 means it is designed for someone around 120cm in height, and of average build.

This sizing method works very well, and is probably 99% accurate. The important thing to remember, especially with kids sizes, is that you can allow growing room. So, if your child is, say, 122cm tall, choosing the 120cm will be the ideal fit, and allows for around another 3cm to 4cm growth. Some are tempted to go to the next size, to try and get some extra ‘mileage’ out of there hard earned money, and whilst this can be fine for some, not many children enjoy looking like they are wearing something too big, making them look like they are wearing a tent!

The rule of thumb for up sizing is if your child is bang in the middle, for example, 125cm tall. Then, we would always recommend the next size, in this case, the 130cm. Yes, it may look a little baggy still, but kids do grow quickly, so that look will be temporary!

So, simply measure the height of the person and pick the most suitable sized uniform.

Some people are not average build, and this can be taken into account. So, if you or your child are, say super thin, then going a size down would be a good move, Likewise, if you are on the generous side of build, you can go up a size. The important thing is comfort.
